AFMS personnel receive AFA national awards

WASHINGTON -- The Air Force Association kicked off its annual national convention in Washington D.C. in September with an awards ceremony, honoring the outstanding achievements of men and women throughout the United States Air Force, government, academia and the aerospace industry.

Taking home the association’s top honors, the Paul W. Meyer Award, was Maj. (Dr.) J. Scott Calder, 74th Medical Support Squadron, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The award is presented for outstanding contributions to Air Force medicine.

“These types of awards are about taking advantage of being in the right place at the right time and having good support from leadership and staff,” said Calder. “I am honored to be selected among the many physicians doing outstanding work.”

Capt. Scott F. Sanders, a primary care optimization clinical nurse with the 62nd Medical Operation Squadron at McChord AFB, Wash.,earned the highest honor in the field of nursing, the Juanita Redmond Award.

Sanders was recognized for outstanding leadership, bravery and professionalism as a member of a critical care air transport team deployed to Incirlick AB, Turkey, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Citizen Airman award recipients -- presented to traditional Air National Guard members who served in the aerospace expeditionary force, and their employers -- included Maj. Janey B. Worth, a flight nurse assigned to the 908th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Maxwell AFB, Ala., and her civilian employer Managed Access, Inc., a medical staffing and project management company in Tampa, Fla.

Taking home the Air National Guard George Bush awards were Capt. Eric N. Erickson, a physician assistant with the 177th Medical Group, New Jersey ANG and his employer, the JFK Johnson Rehabilitating Institute Center for Head Injuries, Edison, N.J.

The award presentations were part of the AFA’s celebration of “Up From Kitty Hawk-the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight”.
