Nine AFMS members receive AMSUS awards

Nine active and retired AFMS members received awards at the 108th annual conference of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States in Louisville, Ky., in mid-November.  The AMSUS awards acknowledge the abilities of many outstanding federal healthcare individuals. 

Retired Col. Patricia E. Boyle, who recently retired from her position as director  of congressional and public affairs, office of the Air Force surgeon general, Bolling AFB, D.C., received a Founder’s Award.  According to the citation, she received the award “for her dedication and outstanding service to the association during the 20 months she served as General Chair of the 108th annual meeting.”

Also taking home the Founder’s Medal is retired Air Force Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Paul K. Carlton Jr., for the leadership provided the association as its president and for the support he provided to the AMSUS 108th annual meeting.        

Other 2002 recipients from the Air Force include:

* Col. Norman S. (Steve) Ray -- Ray E. Brown Award – Awarded for his visionary leadership of the Air Force Medical Service Corps

* Lt. Col. John S. Murray -- Clinical Nursing Excellence Award – Awarded for his extraordinary clinical contributions to the health of children and families both nationally and internationally

Retired Col. (Dr.) Val G. Hemming -- Richard A. Kern Lecture Award – Awarded for his lecture entitled “Gorge M. Sternberg: ‘The Function of the Army Medical School’ A Hundred Year Reprise.”

* Col. (Dr.) Shannon E. Mills -- Carl A. Schlack Award -- Awarded for significantly enhancing dental safety of both patients and healthcare professionals through his tireless efforts to develop, promote and implement cost-effective and rational infection control and occupational safety guidelines.

Maj. Philip E. Jones -- Colonel Thomas L. Spruiell Medical Field Training Exercise Planner Award – Awarded for visionary integration and interoperability improvement of joint and coalition medical capabilities for our future force enhancement.

 * Lt. Col. David J. Lannen -- Paul F. Truran, Jr., Medical Materiel And Logistics Award – Awarded for excellence in Federal Healthcare Logistics Management

* Capt. Michelle A. Stephens -- Young Federal Healthcare Administrator Award – Awarded for her dedication to integrity, personal excellence and service to the healthcare community.
