Anthropometric Measurements

Anthropometric measurements are done as part of your FC I, IFC II, MFS, or specialty evaluation requested by HQ AETC. The anthropometric device at Brooks City-Base is extremely accurate and is the only device accepted by the USAF to determine waiver eligibility. Anthropometric waivers are not considered “medical”, however, waiver requests will be initiated to HQ AETC but will often require further cockpit evaluation as directed by AETC/SG.

If you have been directed by AETC/SG to have additional anthropometric measurements accomplished, please contact us at DSN: 240-5074 or Comm: 210-536-5074 to schedule an appointment. Measurements are accomplished on Thursday and Friday mornings and take approximately 20 minutes.

Standing Height

The vertical height between the floor surface and the top of the head. The subject stands erect on a flat surface with the head oriented in the Frankfurt Plane.

Sitting Height

The vertical distance between the sitting surface and the top of the head. The subject sits erect on a flat surface with the head in the Frankfurt plane.

Buttock-Knee

The horizontal distance between the most protrusive point of the right buttock and the most forward point of the right knee. The subject sits on a flat surface, looking straight ahead. The thighs are parallel and the feet are in line with the thighs on a surface adjusted so the knees are bent 90 degrees.

Sitting Eye Height

The vertical distance between the sitting surface and the outer corner of the right eye. The subject sits erect on a flat surface with the head oriented in the Frankfurt Plane.

Sitting Knee Height

The vertical distance between the foot rest and the top of the right patella. The subject sits erect on a flat surface. The thighs are parallel and the feet are in line with the thighs on a surface adjusted so the knees are bent 90 degrees.

Sitting Shoulder Height

The vertical distance between the sitting surface and the tip of the right shoulder. The subject sits erect on a flat surface looking straight ahead. The upper arms are relaxed at the sides with the forearms and hands extended horizontally with the palms facing each other.

Arm Span

The distance between the tips of the middle fingers of the horizontally outstretched arms. The subject stands erect with the heels together. Both arms and hands are stretched horizontally with the tip of the middle finger of one hand just touching a side wall. The technician measures from the wall to the tip of the opposite finger.

Funtional Reach (Pilot)

With applicant sitting, both shoulder blades (scapulae) touching vertical chair surface. Subject will form a fist with the thumb extended over the index finger, extend the arm horizontally forward while maintaining scapulae to chair surface contact. Measure the distance from the tip of the thumb to the vertical chair surface.
