13.  Destruction of Property by Disaster

Destruction of Property by Disaster Checklist

Losing one’s house to fire, flood, or other disaster is a significant stressor both emotionally and financially.  Reestablishing a stable environment (e.g., finding alternate housing) and restructuring their lives (e.g., processing insurance claims, replacing property, clothing, and legal documents, establishing social networks in new neighborhoods) is a lengthy process during which support is needed.  Throughout the recovery process, survivors may experience multiple emotions such as fear, guilt, grief, anger, self-blame, and resentment.

The ability to cope with the aftermath of fires depends on the availability and dependability of the support system (e.g., friends, supporting agencies), the individual’s emotional stability prior to the loss, and concurrent or other recent losses (e.g., death of family member or pet).
